Job Titles in the Legal Industry
Thoughts on the significance of job titles from our Senior Recruitment Consultant Sue Peers
After more than a decade in legal recruitment, I’ve negotiated offers where compensation, progression and flexibility were all on the table, yet the job title isn’t necessarily considered. For some candidates, this is of equal importance, but why can it matter?
Client perception and external optics crop up regularly in my discussions, especially with those bringing clients to a new firm. They may be concerned that being introduced as “Senior Associate” is often perceived differently to “Legal Director” or “Partner”, even where their technical capability is identical. The title can signal several things externally such as level of experience, authority to advise and decision-making power.
Titles can also impact lateral mobility. Future employers may benchmark candidates based on their current title. A lawyer held back title-wise may find themselves under-levelled in the market, regardless of capability.
And yet, two “Senior Associates” at different firms can be worlds apart in capability. Similarly, “Partner” can mean equity owner in one firm and salaried employee in another.
So yes, titles are a consideration, but they are a proxy, not a goal. A strategical lateral move without an immediate title bump can sometimes be far more powerful long-term than chasing title alone.
